The notion of “data revolution for sustainable development” identifies a significant need for massive restructuring of infrastructures to generate global, reliable, comparable, and timely data. Government data should be open – freely accessible, presented in a format that is comparable and reusable and, ideally, released in a timely manner. This paper documents the availability and openness of data sets in India that are relevant for monitoring targets set under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) directive. Findings reveal most available data is not freely accessible, outdated, and imprecise. SDG indicators are based on disaggregation, which is key to precision and therefore usability.en
