Gendered intrahousehold power structures, gendered dynamics of resource allocation, and women’s limited ability in decision-making impact maternal health-seeking behaviour and overall health status. Using a gender lens, this study explores causes of women’s limited access to and utilisation of maternal healthcare services in rural areas of Edo State, Nigeria. Interventions geared towards supporting women’s financial independence are important for improving their access to skilled healthcare, as well as those that improve women’s decision-making capacities. A man’s financial status determines the type of care his spouse or partner sought. Approximately 58,000 Nigerian women die from pregnancy-related complications yearly.en
