dc.description.abstract | In the project’s target countries: Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda, growth of urban slums is an ongoing problem. As such, the potential of local bamboo resources to provide an alternative, sustainable, safe, and affordable building material was assessed. INBAR has demonstrated that due to its strength, versatility, and earthquake-resistant, fast-growing, and self-regenerating properties, bamboo is a highly renewable and affordable housing material. This project built one conventional and one modern bamboo building in both Kenya and Uganda, trained over 60 people on bamboo cultivation, management and construction, and conducted feasibility, value chain and sustainability studies. Two universities have adopted bamboo construction into their curriculum. | en |
