When it comes to food security, young women’s labour and time are disproportionately affected by the decisions of other household members, thus affecting their children as well. For example, in patriarchal households in Mali, and based on how decisions around food are made, younger women may be more food insecure than others. Subsidies that help people shift their farming practices can have unintended long-term consequences on food security. In semi-arid areas, the scarcity and expense of clean water can affect people’s health and nutrition. This policy brief suggests that vulnerable women and young men be included in farm subsidy planning.en
