Collaborative Adaptation Research Initiative in Africa and Asia (CARIAA) aims to build the resilience of vulnerable populations and their livelihoods in three climate change hot spots in Africa and Asia. The strong relationship between climate variability, water stress, food production, and wellbeing warrants an intersectional focus, for instance, on household/family structure - one example of a “blind spot” in vulnerability assessments. Adaptation options for the most vulnerable require careful consideration of issues often ignored by traditional assessments. The paper uses examples of water and food systems to highlight the critical importance of considering blind spots in vulnerability assessments.en
