To date, the relationship between small-holder poultry production and trade, and in particular, between small-scale poultry holders, poultry traders and live bird markets has been insufficiently studied and documented in Vietnam (the most serious HPAI H5N1-affected country). This information is difficult to obtain but is essential for understanding outbreak recurrence associated with poultry trade. The available information for Vietnam does not provide substantive evidence on the association between production and trade in smallholder poultry and its role on outbreak occurrence. It is an urgent need to better understand the flow of live poultry, as investigated in a poultry trade network and explore its potential role in the risk for HPAI H5N1 introduction and spread and the resulting implications for disease control. Many channels exited for the sale of backyard grow-poultry and poultry products; however farm gate sales to traders and neighbours seam to be dominant, followed by local market sales. In this channel, small holders are what is termed “unlinked”, meaning that, poultry sales are derived solely through market-based relationships rather than any formal integrativel linkage with other actors in the chain. The traders/middlemen owned bicycles, motorcycles, cars and public mean to transport live birds, meat and eggs collected from farmers to the markets. The traders can move through different villages with the farest distant of about 200 km. This is one of the most risk factors in spreading the pathogen but the control or quarantine are not done in regullarly by the functional organizations.en
