dc.description.abstract | WTO negotiations have led to substantial disciplining of the tariff structure, while non-tariff measures (NTMs) such as Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) standards are on the rise, distorting international trade in the agriculture sector. Developed countries’ adoption of more stringent non-tariff barriers such as technologically intensive standards and regulations means an imperative for developing country governments to support the technological upgrading of their domestic agricultural sectors. There are concerns of a growing protectionist use of NTMs in the wake of trade liberalization and currently, there are no built-in reprisal mechanisms either through the SPS Agreement or in the Dispute Settlement Understanding (DSU). | en |
