Abstract
The focus of the study is the Economic Corridors and Cross Border Transportation Agreement (CBTA), two important initiatives for transport and trade facilitation under the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) programme of the Asian Development Bank (ADB). In particular, the trade facilitation measures analysed here are the second and third Thai-Lao Friendship Bridges and the East-West Economic Corridor. Local border communities are most affected by implementation of trade facilitation measures. Many are experiencing unaddressed negative impacts on the poor from human and drug trafficking, gambling, disease, prostitution, environmental effects and income disparities. There are no financial institutions, either formal or informal, that provide sufficient assistance in meeting the financial needs of the poor and local communities.
