Rural Poverty and Environment (RPE) / Pauvreté rurale et environnement (PRE)
Permanent URI for this community
Rural Poverty and Environment (RPE) supported research focused on the needs of the rural poor who live in fragile or degraded ecosystems. The program initiative used an approach that combined participatory action research to generate knowledge; capacity development for researchers and decision makers to participate in multi-stakeholder processes; and policy engagement to build action and learning oriented partnerships.

The project aimed to implement on a pilot basis, insights drawn from the Adaptive Strategies Project, including programs for watershed development, drought-proofing, flood mitigation and coastal post-tsunami reconstruction. It worked to enable local communities in northern Ganga plains and coastal Tamil Nadu and Gujarat to better deal with impacts of climate variability and anthropogenic climate change. In forest areas across Asia the expansion of palm oil plantations, indiscriminate logging and clearance of forests put forests and the communities that depend on them under pressure. The development of flexible, participatory governance systems that can learn from experience and generate knowledge is an important mechanism for adaptation and resilience. Can collaborative learning really address direct conflicts of interest? The book explores this question using case studies and evidence-based research towards better strategies, processes, arrangements and tools.Item Adaptive learning in natural resource management : three approaches to research(IDRC, Ottawa, ON, CA, 2008) Tyler, Stephen R.This paper explores different approaches to applied research in natural resource management that focus on adaptive learning as an element of the resource management challenge of continuous sustainable production. The research frameworks suggested by Adaptive Management (AM), social learning, and complex adaptive systems (resilience thinking) are considered. While AM typically emphasizes natural science and ecological systems, and social learning emphasizes human agency and interaction, resilience thinking addresses social-ecological systems as complex entities that behave in dynamic and cyclical fashion. All three frameworks offer insights into practices that support learning, adaptation, and sustainability. Some of the experience in the Canadian province of British Columbia is given in example. The emerging framework of adaptive co-management offers a promising approach to capturing relevant features of the other three. These four different conceptual approaches should not be seen as mutually exclusive alternatives but rather are characterized by overlapping features with different focal strengths. To date, experience with applying any of these frameworks in practice is limited and remains a big challenge. The conceptual frameworks considered here could underpin research into more effective adaptive learning in resource management.Item Adaptive policies : seven things policymakers should know to craft better policies in today's dynamic and uncertain world; presented by IISD, hosted by Policy Research Initiative and the Rural Secretariat, February 4th, 2009(International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), Winnipeg, MB, CA, 2009) Swanson, Darren; International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD); The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI)
