Item Antimicrobial activity of chemically and biologically treated chitosan prepared from black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) pupal shell waste(MDPI, 2021-11-23) Lagat, Mevin Kiprotich; Were, Samuel; Ndwigah, Francis; Kemboi, Violah Jepkogei; Kipkoech, Carolyne; Tanga, Chrysantus Mbi; Ciani, MaurizioThis study presents the first comparative analysis of chemical and biological extraction of chitin and chitosan from black soldier fly (BSF) pupal exuviae. The antibacterial activity of chitosan was also evaluated. Chemical and biological extraction gave a chitin yield of 10.18% and 11.85%, respectively. Biological extraction gives high yields as compared to chemical extraction and can be used as an alternative method since it is inexpensive and eco‐friendly. A maximum chitosan yield of 6.58% was achieved via chemical treatment. The findings demonstrate that chitosan from BSF pupal exuviae could become a novel therapeutic agent for drug development against resistant strains of bacteria. The overall project pertains to climate compatible development and IPCC recommendations. This study applies two types of analyses: (i) a livelihood resilience approach: by constructing a resilience index for migrant and non-migrant households, and (ii) a case study approach for each study site, towards better understanding of factors that drive out-migration from rural areas; the social impacts of male out-migration on left-behind families; and the profile of current and potential migrants among households. This report is part of a long-term research agenda that guides Pathways to Resilience in Semi-arid Economies (PRISE).Item Policy mapping: women's economic empowerment in Uganda(2020-12) Bantebya-Kyomuhendo, Grace; Mwagale Guloba, Madina; Sunday, NathanThis scoping paper highlights policies, plans, and initiatives related to women’s economic empowerment in Uganda. The study provides information about marketing to kids (M2K) found in labeling of processed and ultra-processed food products sold in a supermarket chain (in Lima, Peru) and to determine how labeling relates to critical nutrient content. Children choose their favourite product based on packaging, specifically on colors and drawings which influence their perception of which product is “healthiest.” The study contributes to evidence-based decision making in policy processes.Item Renforcer les connaissances et les capacités, et améliorer les systèmes ESEC(2021) LE CENTRE D’EXCELLENCE sur les systèmes ESECItem Resumen ejecutivo(2017-05-12) Scribano, RossanaItem Snapshot of civil registration and vital statistics systems of Liberia(Centre of Excellence for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Systems, 2019) Zewoldi, YacobThe report provides a brief introduction to the civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems in Liberia. The information was collected through a questionnaire completed by the Ministry of Health in January 2019 and supplemented by a desk review of available documents. According to the Vital and Health Statistics Department of the Ministry of Health, about 546,000 or 75 per cent of births (2018) were not registered in Liberia. The civil registration and vital statistics systems in Liberia are not integrated among themselves or with other sectors.Item Snapshot of civil registration and vital statistics systems of Madagascar(Centre of Excellence for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) Systems, 2021) Harbitz, MiaMadagascar has a decentralized civil registration system, with no central depository of records. A key element of new legislation is the creation of a National Civil Registration and Identification Center. The responsibility for civil registration in Madagascar is divided between the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Justice. Registration tasks are generally carried out by the municipalities [communes]. Upon the planned modernization of the civil registration system, Madagascar will create a database for civil register records once the format of the unique identification number (UIN) has been determined.
