Item Access to healthcare for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in Accra, Ghana : challenges and strategies for improvement(2017-04) Lamptey, De-Lawrence; School of Rehabilitation Therapy, Queen’s UniversityFindings of this study reveal that children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in Accra are affected by several health conditions, including sensory, respiratory, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal disorders. Results imply that although children with IDD in Ghana might be affected by several health conditions, they confront complex structural and psychosocial barriers in accessing healthcare which undermines Ghana’s commitment on the international front to provide equitable access to healthcare for all. Barriers include financial means, social connections, access to transportation, and attitudes of healthcare providers and the general public toward children with IDD.Item Adaptation to climate change in Calakmul, Campeche, Mexico : bridging disciplines and scales with scenario based integrative modeling(Rural Poverty and Environment, IDRC, Ottawa, ON, CA, 2009) Rodriguez Baide, Joysee M.The research aims to determine strategies that could assist successful adaptations to climate variability in complex socio-ecological systems such as the Calakmul biosphere region in Mexico. The presentation reviews environmental conditions and the lack of access to water supply, the organizational structure in Calakmul, the importance of forest resources, and the necessity of diverse income generating activities. Livelihoods are mainly dependent on natural resources (extraction and land conversion for cropping or cattle ranching). Regulations over resources and political marginalization can greatly limit adaptation options. The study presents some options and mechanisms for livelihood diversification.Item Adapting to climate change in Calakmul, Campeche, Mexico : bridging disciplines and scales with scenario-based, integrative modeling; technical report(Rural Poverty and Environment, IDRC, Ottawa, ON, CA, 2010) Rodriguez Baide, Joysee M.The report provides background to current socio-economic and environmental conditions in Calakmul, in particular rainfall variability and hydrological aspects of the region. Appropriate understanding and representation of the climate vulnerability aspects of socio-ecological systems is crucial. A participatory scenario modelling method provides an innovative, interactive way of looking at the future to explore potential and proactive decisions. Thematic issues were developed from a compilation of 235 survey participants.Item Agricultural land-use change in Kerala, India : perspectives from above and below the canopy(Elsevier B.V., 2017-05) Fox, Thomas; Rhemtullaa, Jeanine; Ramankuttya, Navin; Leska, Corey; Coyle, Theraesa; Kunhamub, T.K.Agroforests are undergoing rapid land-use change not discernible using remote sensing. This research highlights the value of using mixed methods for characterizing land-use and land-cover histories in tropical regions. According to farmers, the primary drivers of this shift are declining profitability of agriculture in Kerala, labour shortages, unreliable weather, unfamiliar pests and diseases, and government policy. Despite the undeniable move away from agricultural activity in home gardens, the paper concludes that these ecologically and culturally important systems are not disappearing, but rather evolving to meet the needs of a less agricultural Kerala. Item Anxiété : le drame des toujours-inquiets; quand ça va mal, ils s’inquiètent – quand ça va bien, ils s’inquiètent aussi – que se passe-t-il donc dans la tête des anxieux?(Vélo Québec Éditions, 2016) Guillemette, MélissaItem Asma Khader : a feminist warrior and legend of Jordan(2016) Al Bahrani, YusurItem Assessing equity in access to healthy diets in Ecuador following the addition of food sovereignty to the constitution(University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, CA, 2014-04) Garton, Kelly; Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (Population and Public Health), the University of British ColumbiaThis project aims to provide entry points for policies and programs to improve access to, and consumption of healthy foods. These policy initiatives fall within the scope of a commitment to food sovereignty, which Ecuador introduced to its constitution in 2008 in an effort to improve diets and protect local agricultural production. However, results show knowledge of food sovereignty as nonexistent, likewise awareness of any policies to improve access to healthy food. Affordability could be addressed either by improving linkages between producers and consumers, and by adopting fiscal policies that subsidize healthy foods and tax unhealthy ones.Item Assessing monetary valuation methodologies for estimating the impacts of climate change in the Laguna de Rocha (Uruguay)(Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS, CA, 2012) Fanning, Andrew L.Three valuation methodologies are implemented in this thesis, to estimate the monetary values of climate change impacts on specific ecosystem services. Using a case study of a coastal lagoon ecosystem in Uruguay (Laguna de Rocha), results suggest that climate change is affecting its economic value. Implications for local management and lessons learned from the case study are discussed. Using the market price method is particularly relevant for the case of carbon sequestration services. The ‘change in productivities’ method is the most relevant and feasible methodology for estimating the economic value of climate ‘inputs’ to the productive activities in the Laguna area.Item Awakening of an Andean tiger : can Colombia's recent growth create enough employment?(Universidad de Cartagena, Cartagena, CO, 2009) Escobar Espinoza, AndrésEconomic growth has been on the rise in Colombia and surpassed 6% in 2006 and 2007. Has growth been enough to absorb Colombian workers? Jobless growth seems to have marked Colombia’s recent economic history. Over time, periods of high growth in Colombia have been associated with increases in employment. During periods of high growth (1974-80 and 1985-1994), one percent increase in Colombian manufacturing GDP translated into an increase of about 0.3 to 0.5 percent in employment. However, during the most recent growth period (2001- 2005), permanent manufacturing employment simply dropped. Growth in small firms, particularly those in light and heavy industries, producing for the domestic market was the one segment of the economy with employment growth over the latter period.Item Awakening of an Andean tiger : can Colombia's recent growth create jobs?(IDRC, Ottawa, ON, CA, 2009) Escobar, AndrésThe awakening of one of the largest Latin American economies has yet to translate into good news for Colombian workers. The paper provides an overview of the Colombian labour market in the 1990s and 2000s, analyzing data that reveals employment patterns for both national and urban Colombia. The analysis then narrows to focus on the manufacturing sector in the 1974-2005 period, while providing a breakdown by firm size and technological level. During the most recent growth period (2001-2005), permanent employment in manufacturing dropped. This paper is part of the IDRC “Globalization, Growth, and Poverty” (GGP) initiative.Item Back then, you'll eat, you'll drink, and you'll be full. There was enough and there were Leftovers : women's changing experiences of urban food security in Ibadan, Nigeria(Faculty of Environmental Studies, York University, Toronto, ON, CA, 2012) Adeniyi Ogunyankin, Grace; Chinedu Omenka, SamuelItem Behind any great woman is herself : the only Muslim woman forensic doctor in Jordan(2016) Al Bahrani, YusurItem Being young in Old Town : youth subjectivities and associational life in Bamenda(2008) Fokwang, JudeYoung people are redefining their place in society as they face challenges of AIDS, unemployment, and the failure of nation-building in a post-independence Africa. This study explores youth responses to socio-economic and political marginalization and the kinds of individual and collective agency needed for negotiating transition to social adulthood. It is an ethnographic investigation about what it means to be young in Bamenda, the north-west province of Cameroon. Although biologically adults, young men and women may be far from achieving adult-like independence.Item Biodiversity and human nutrition in a landscape mosaic of farms and forests in the East Usambara Mountains, Tanzania(School of Dietetics and Human Nutrition, McGill University, Montreal, QC, CA, 2012) Powell, Bronwen; School of Dietetics and Human Nutrition, McGill UniversityThis research is one of the first studies to examine dietary diversity as a pathway between biodiversity and nutrition. It provides a novel case study using a systems approach and applies the EcoHealth approach to nutrition. It examines relationships between biodiversity and human nutrition in the East Usambara Mountains, Tanzania (at the landscape level). Biodiversity and landscape level variables were assessed by questionnaire and Geographic Information System (GIS). Most of the dietary diversity scores showed significant positive correlations to energy intake, concurrent with local knowledge which emphasizes the importance of dietary diversity.Item Biography on Fiji’s founding father released(2009) Carruthers, DaleThis is a webpage from the Fiji Daily Post newsletter with an article that announces the publication of a new biography on Ratu Mara, Fiji’s first post-colonial prime minister, which was launched on the nation’s 39th birthday (2009). Renowned for his advocacy of multi-racial cooperation, Ratu Mara sought a common path that would transcend race and religion.Item Blood on the stone : greed, corruption and war in the global diamond trade(IDRC, Ottawa, ON, CA, 2010) Smillie, IanBlood on the Stone is about the cartel, the warlords, the gun runners and the shadowy traders who populate Africa’s bloody diamond wars, and a faltering, decade-long effort to clean up an entire industry. The diamond wars have destroyed the lives of millions and crippled the economies of Angola, the Congo, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. UN peacekeeping forces are another legacy of “conflict” or “blood diamonds.” The Kimberley certification process has been hailed as a regulatory model for Africa’s extractive minerals. However, it runs the risk of becoming an ineffectual talk shop, standing aside as criminals re-infest the diamond world.Item Bolivie : Eldorado du lithium; bourse de journalisme du CRDI 2009-2010, rapport final(2010) Bastien, Jean-PierreItem Bridging organizations to improve conservation fit in the Coral Triangle(2017) Berdej, Samantha; Department of Geography, University of WaterlooIdentifying how bridging organizations shape narratives, and what actions and consequences flow from these narratives, can contribute to more effective interventions and conservation policy. Based on three case studies from across southern Indonesia: the Bali Marine Protected Area Network, the Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area and the East Buleleng Conservation Zone, the thesis studies how bridging organizations such as Reef Check Indonesia (RC-I), a national-level NGO; the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Buleleng, a regency-level government agency; and the Indonesian Nature Foundation (LINI), a national-level NGO can cultivate social networks to support interactive processes for more adaptive coastal-marine governance.
