Many projects have failed using conventional approaches due to community exploitation and fatigue, lack of local ownership of the process, and inability of outsiders to understand local social and ecological systems. The paper proposes methods for building competencies of scientists in action learning, systemic reflection and participatory teaming culture. PRM is key to fostering innovation in Natural Resources Management and improvement of livelihoods.Item Beyond the farm : a new look at livelihood constraints in the highlands of Eastern Africa(AHI, Kampala, UG, 2003) German, LauraItem Restoring soil fertility in the highlands of East Africa through participatory research(AHI, Kampala, UG, 2003) Amede, TilahunItem Transforming Institutions to Achieve Innovation in Research and Development(IDRC, Ottawa, ON, CA, 2003) Stroud, A.Item Watershed entry : a socially-optimal approach(AHI, Kampala, UG, 2003) German, LauraItem Institutionalising participation in Eastern Africa research institutes([international institute for Environment and Development], [London], GB, 2003) Opondo, C.; Stroud, A.; German, L.; Hagmann, J.Through on-the-ground examples, the article advances the argument for institutionalizing participatory research methodologies. The African Highlands Initiative (AHI) builds competencies of researchers and others through training courses, mentoring, exchange visits, peer review, and applying participatory research methodologies (PRM). In most agricultural research organisations, professional rewards and advancement are based on crop variety development and scientific papers. There are no extrinsic rewards for using PRM; for incorporating important social and institutional dimensions into one’s work; or being responsive to clients’ priorities and needs. Capacity building and reformed reward structures can help foster institutional change to support inclusion.Item From formal to participatory plant breeding : improving barley production in the rainfed areas of Jordan; final technical report(International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas, Aleppo, SY, 2003) International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry AreasItem Harmonizing the agricultural biotechnology debate for the benefit of African farmers(Academic Journals, 2003) Kelemu, S.; Mahuku, G.; Fregene, M.; Pachico, D.; Johnson, N.Item What about the land user? : an African grassroots innovation for livelihood and environment (AGILE) approach(AHI, Kampala, UG, 2003) Tanui, JosephItem Linked technologies for increasing adoption and impact(AHI, Kampala, UG, 2003) Stroud, AnnItem AHI program brief(AHI, Kampala, UG, 2003) Stroud, Ann
