dc.description.abstract“The role of smallholders in organic agriculture” is a contribution of IFOAM, the organic movement, for public policies advocacy work and to build a more equitable society. The original document was constructed and translated in Spanish with inputs and support from AGROECO. It is well known and documented how marginalized smallholders have been, receiving little attention and being almost invisible for the eyes of the policy makers at the national and international decision level. The Position Paper of IFOAM, highlights the multi target benefits that smallholders are anciently delivering to society. With this document, smallholders are recognized to have a fundamental role as stewardships of biodiversity, in food production and sustainable rural economies. IFOAM calls for a much higher investment in pro-smallholder science, technology, infrastructure, services and innovation. Only then, the promotion of sustainable organic smallholder systems and business can play a difference to overcome poverty, isolation and marginalization. Smallholders, peasants and campesinos around the world should be regarded as key part of the solution for food insecurity and not the problem.en
