Abstract

The book contains analyses of five national cases (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela) and two core topics: political and institutional reforms, and the role of social movements. They are part of the Democratic Governance in the Andean Region project. The goal was to generate solid academic knowledge concerning topics of institutional reform, crucial for democratic governance in Andean countries. The democratizing contribution of these movements has been limited by the nature of the reforms – often disorderly, partial, contradictory and interrupted. Important dynamics and patterns, problems and challenges are common to Andean countries.
