Massive deforestation in Ethiopia has reduced the contribution of forests to environmental protection, food security, and income generation. This paper discusses the processes, lessons and challenges encountered during the establishment and management of four participatory plant nurseries. The African Highland Initiative (AHI) project sought to address land degradation in selected watersheds of Ethiopia. Community nurseries are important resources for reforestation in degraded areas, and active participation, timely attention, sustained commitment and proper coordination of activities are essential. Some major constraints in sustained participation were encountered in this development-oriented project.en
