Abstract
Complex interactions of human encroachment, climatic variability and sea-level rise lead to degradation of the coastal environment and hinder economic development, which in particular focuses on the tourism sector. Trends in regional climatic variability were assessed in terms of water availability and main water consuming activities. Analysis indicates there is no alternative for the development and implementation of comprehensive climate change policies and appropriate adaptation strategies. The agricultural sector, as the largest water consumer needs to modify current water management practices towards sustainability. Tourism development must consider the hydrological balance where demands exceed groundwater resources.
