The research initiative aims to support the Egyptian national strategy to combat poverty through agricultural development of reclaimed desert land; the Government of Egypt plans to settle approximately one million people in the area around Lake Nasser by the year 2017. The research explores agro-ecology as a sustainable strategy for improving socioeconomic conditions, health, and livelihoods of poor and marginalized settler communities living in fragile ecosystems. Environmental hazards are multiplying as more settlers arrive in the area.en
