dc.description.abstract	The research initiative aims to support the Egyptian national strategy to combat poverty through agricultural development of reclaimed desert land; the Government of Egypt plans to settle approximately one million people in the area around Lake Nasser by the year 2017. The research explores agro-ecology as a sustainable strategy for improving socioeconomic conditions, health, and livelihoods of poor and marginalized settler communities living in fragile ecosystems. Environmental hazards are multiplying as more settlers arrive in the area.	en
