The paper outlines the processes of research and relationship to intellectual property rights at various stages of the research process: knowledge innovation, applied research, and patent commercialization are covered. Models and case studies are provided, as well as copyright procedures, confidentiality, trademarks, and aspects of institutional and public/private partnerships. Collaborative projects involving two or more parties require delicate handling in order to enable the participants to equitably benefit from their labours. There is need for clear agreements that include prior-informed consent, material transfer agreements, non-disclosure agreements, licensing agreements, technology transfer agreements, joint ventures and franchising agreements.en
