This detailed account of Mumbai's trajectory of socio-spatial transformations provides a framework for further case studies. Alongside a broad conception of development-related violences, the concept of spatial (in)justice can also serve to anchor larger enquiries as well. Particular attention is paid to ways the state and the market have shaped socio-spatial transformations of the city at different times. This review of the transforming city indicates that violence is embedded in the very ways the city has developed. It calls attention to structural inequalities, and their relationship with poverty and vulnerability that shape urban transformation and are sustained by it.en
