Launching Workshop Report 17-20 May 2011 UCT GSB Breakwater Lodge Conference Centre Cape Townen
The Open AIR project focuses on the future of innovation, open IP, and innovation in Africa. The workshop examines assumptions regarding the necessity for strong Intellectual Property (IP) protection as a prerequisite for innovation (i.e. the incentive argument) and as well, explores the impeding effects of IP protection on innovation. Through African Innovation Research (AIR) and several other initiatives on IP that focus on African law, policy-makers can find credible research-based evidence to make informed decision or policy choices. Innovation and the idea of IP seem antithetical to the African experience, where the current system excludes many people and much of African innovation.en
