This detailed report provides an update on the progress of research. Qualitative studies were carried out in Brazil and South Africa, investigating the spatial distribution of violence, poverty and inequality in order to better understand the structural context of social cohesion. The analysis yielded important new understandings: even when interventions significantly improve violence, they can at the same time have a negative effect on social cohesion. This in turn affects long term sustainability and ownership by communities. Analysis includes the relationship between inequality, poverty and homicide down to the municipal level, using the most recent homicide data.en
