People living on and around the Tonle Sap Lake and the Mekong River have no effective and affordable sanitation systemsen
Sanitation in floating communities in the Mekong River is challenged by the absence of technology options and multiple generations of people who have never been exposed to sanitation practices. Local knowledge provided critical input into appropriate system design as well as education for the local community around the Tonle Sap freshwater lake. Working with local fabricators, the research team designed a basic floating latrine and developed a manufacturing technique using local materials for a cost of US $40. The Phat Sanday floating community has been essential in helping develop the process and providing feedback for each phase.en
