This paper considers the relationship between social and academic spheres in students’ communication networks, with reference to computer and cell phone use. The context for the study is a resource-constrained South African higher education environment where personal computer ownership is not the norm and many students rely on campus-based infrastructure for computer access and use. The analysis examines participants’ location in their networks, the structure of the networks, and the relationship between the physical and the virtual.en
