The project aimed to strengthen young women’s public participation through information and communication technologies (ICT) including social media, developing IT skills, producing images, documentaries and public events and campaigns. While South African universities may concentrate efforts on increasing “academic excellence” at the expense of a marginalized public education system –marginalized people continue to be the primary subjects in university-based research. This action-research project sought to incorporate young women as active producers of knowledge, and to ensure that their voices are heard. There is an urgent need to set in place support systems for enhancing the public participation of youth in South Africa.en
