This paper summarises the current state of knowledge on water management in the rapidly urbanising Arkavathy sub-basin while identifying critical knowledge gaps for future researchers. The analysis provides details of the catchment area in terms of population, geography, water supply, demand, and allocation, along with the institutional context of water management. Each issue is summarized outlining the magnitude and distribution of the problem, along with discussion of some of the biophysical and socio-institutional determinants. The water management ‘problem’ is defined using a four-dimensional framework of water scarcity, fairness, sustainability and water quality. Key knowledge gaps are highlighted.en
