dc.description.abstract | While smoking prevalence levels have dropped sharply in the last two decades in South Africa, anti-tobacco advocates note that rates seem to have bottomed out in the late 2000s at about 23% for adults. Non-cigarette use is high in certain demographic groups but needs more attention as the tobacco industry finds ways to undermine legislation. Second-hand tobacco smoke is of particular concern in homes. There are bans on smoking in most public places. Research has played an essential role in supporting both policy development and advocacy efforts. South Africa is part of the African Tobacco Situational Analyses (ATSA) initiative. | en |
