This research questions the nature of the contemporary Indian state, its relationship to neoliberalism, implications for the poor, and governance in relation to settlements and the urban poor. There are critical shifts in the forms, intensity, nature, sources and instruments of violence since the 1990s. The case study is divided into six sections: 1. The theoretical and conceptual debate around slums, and methodology for the study 2. Slums in relation to the city of Mumbai, particularly the M (East) ward 3. Slum rehabilitation and resettlement 4. Violence and attempts by residents to confront injustices 5. Struggles for justice 6.Emergent theoretical possibilities.en
