The thesis follows a transition in the epistemological approach of the author, from the following of a discrete project framework to one of a conducting a phenomenological investigation. The original project brief detailed that 'stakeholders' were to participate in the development of the EMS. The subsequent thesis examined the underpinning of the term 'stakeholders' from both a theoretical and empirical perspective.
