The project brings together researchers from China, Singapore, and the United States to look at a wide range of topics relevant to the question of democratization, such as civil society and emerging transparency mechanisms, as well as administrative reforms that could impact China’s political trajectory. It explores whether, and to what degree, a variety of innovations currently underway in local governance in China may set the stage for eventual transition to a democratic system. This report provides a synopsis of project objectives and outputs.en
