Abstract
This case study describes in detail the roots, establishment, operations and strategies for the future of the Southern African Legal Information Institute (SAFLII). It was carried out during a financial crisis. This is an in depth report which outlines challenges of information collection and dissemination where there is country level lack of financial and technical support but a high level of service-oriented legal archiving and principled know-how. SAFLII does not have official agreements, policies or workflow arrangements with the Department of Justice or any of the courts in South Africa. Law librarians have proved tremendously beneficial.
