To this end Gender at Work (G@W) assembled a team from G@W, the Ladysmith Collective and Women at the Table to support AI4D grantees. Over three years, the Gender Support Team worked, first, with 5 hubs and labs: AI4AFS, HASH, Edu-AI, RAIL and Dodoma. The GEI Innovation Challenge allowed us to work with three more: ACTS, Villgro Africa and CITADEL The bulk of our work was to support “learn by doing”; in other words, finding ways to support partners to actually do research with a strong gender perspective. We were not prescriptive as to what this would look like; we endeavored to help partners find solutions that made sense to them within their contexts.Item Open Access Landscape study of AI policies and use in Southern Africa : research report(UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa, 2024) Shilongo, Kiito ; Gaffley, Mark; Plantinga, Paul; Adams, Rachel; Olorunju, NokuthulaThis historical text defines the common values and principles which shall guide the shaping of legal and policy infrastructures that should ensure an ethical and responsible development and use of AI. This study aims to identify some concrete examples of AI uses in Southern Africa in the various fields – with a particular focus on Education, Health, Labour, and Environment – and offers a unique analysis of these uses from the angle of the universal ethical principles enshrined in the UNESCO Recommendation. Through this pioneer study, UNESCO intends to document and show that AI technologies are already being used by people and institutions in many countries of the Southern African region, which requires that regulation and safeguarding mechanisms be put in place rapidly and intentionally.Item Open Access Intelligence artificielle et religion : étude de perceptions - éthique, pratiques et rôle des acteurs religieux au Sénégal(2024-03) Yassine, Rachid ID ; Diop, Khalifa; African Observatory on Responsible AIItem Open Access Landscape study of AI policies and use in Southern Africa : executive summary(2024) Shilongo, Kristophina; Gaffley, Mark; Adams, Rachel; Plantinga, PaulThis executive summary presents the results of the forthcoming study and report that involves (i) a review of policy and legislative instruments relating to AI and digital transformation; and (ii) an analysis of use cases of AI applications in four sectors identified as priorities in the UNESCO Recommendations and aligned with the policy areas outlined in the SADC Industrialisation Strategy and Roadmap: Education, Health and well-being, Labour or the future of work, and Climate change and environmental sustainability.Item Open Access AI and exclusion in public digital systems(2024-03) Razzano, Gabriella; African Observatory on Responsible AIEmerging technologies seemingly present a predictive challenge. Both the dystopian and utopian narratives that followed the popular emergence of ChatGPT have been well characterised as missing out on many of the immediate realities of risks and harms Artificial Intelligence (AI) threatens to exacerbate because of historic, and present, socio-economic and political conditions. Futuristic speculation often distracts from existing lessons from digital introductions that exist on the African continent already. This paper will consider two different digital infrastructure projects in the South African public sphere that involve financial provision to extract some lessons for AI governance and policy of import. Limiting the case studies to the financial aspects allows a significant focus on the particular intentions of different parties and highlights the public-private intersections inherent in South Africa’s AI future.Item Open Access Responsible AI governance in Africa : prospects for outcomes-based regulation(2024-03) Adeleke, Fola ; Akinwale, Funbi; African Observatory on Responsible AIItem Open Access Taking AI ethics from principles to practice : a guide to implementing responsible AI(2024-03) Segun, Samuel ; African Observatory on Responsible AIItem Open Access AI for women's financial inclusion : analysis of product design and policy approaches in Nigeria(2024-03) Omotubora, Adekemi ; African Observatory on Responsible AIItem Restricted Leveraging artificial intelligence for sustainable production and market access to Nsukka yellow pepper in Nigeria(African Technology Policy Studies Network (ATPS), 2024) Anyadike, C ; Okechukwu, M; Eterigho, E; Ukoha-Onuha, E; Onyia, A; Ozor, N; Egonu, S; Ozioko, R; Madukwe, M; Nwakaire, J; Nyambane, AItem Open Access Enhancing Africa’s agriculture and food systems through responsible and gender inclusive AI innovation : lessons learned from AI4AFS innovation research network in Sub-Saharan Africa(2024-07-29) Ozor, Nicholas; Nwakaire, Joel; Nyambane, Alfred; Muhatiah Wentland; Nwobodo, CynthiaItem Restricted Decentralised community-powered weather networks for hyper-localised weather and climate information services in Kenya(African Technology Policy Studies Network (ATPS), 2024-10) Muriithi, Betsy; Pamba, Jane Pauline; Gitahi, Stephen; Shikuku, Mershak; Masinde, Joseph; Ozor, Nicholas; Nwakaire, Joel; Muhatiah, Wentland; Nyambane, AlfredItem Open Access GEI innovation challenge : final technical report(2024-10) Kelleher, DavidItem Open Access Rapport technique période 3 IDIA - Mars 2023 – Août 2024 : Initiative pour le Développement de l’Intelligence Artificielle (IDIA)(2024-09) Badolo, Laetitia ; Kallali, Yossra; Kandé, AngèleItem Open Access Revue documentaire sur les cadres politiques, juridiques et éthiques de l’intelligence artificielle (IA), technologies émergentes et données aux niveaux international, continental, régional et national(2024-07) Fofana, Fatou; Niang, Mamadou; Athie, Tamba; Faye, Cheikh; Tall, LaureItem Open Access Développement et utilisation des systèmes d’intelligence artificielle pour le bien-être de tous en Afrique de l’Ouest (Bénin, Burkina Faso, Côte-d’Ivoire et Sénégal)(2024-07) Fofana, Fatou; Niang, Mamadou; Faye, cheikh; Mboup, Ndèye Fatou; Mingou, IsacItem Open Access Diagnostic du cadre politique juridique et éthique relatif à l’intelligence artificielle aux technologies émergentes et aux données des quatre pays ciblés du projet(2024-07) Fofana, Fatou ; Tall, Laure; Niang, Mamadou; Faye, Cheikh
