In-depth review of the Research Quality Plus (RQ+) legitimacy dimension : insights from IDRCs 2020 RQ+ assessment
(2023-07-31) International Development Research Centre; Penney, Tarra
The Research Quality Plus (RQ+) Approach is a means of assessing and improving the quality of research. The approach, developed by Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) is defined by three key tenets: 1. the need to consider the context in which research takes place; 2. the understanding that research quality is multi-dimensional; and 3. the need for assessments to be systematic and empirical. RQ+ can be used across a spectrum of research activities, and by actors of many types, such as researchers, funders, universities, think tanks or publishers. The focus in this report is the use of RQ+ to guide retrospective research project evaluations at IDRC.

(2023-07) Sambodhi Research and Communications; International Development Research Centre; Nandi, Rajib; Sen, Nidhi; Roy, Amartya Krishna
The report presents the findings of a review of gender equality and inclusion (GEI) in evaluations commissioned by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and completed between 2018 and 2023. The review aims to assess the extent to which GEI was integrated into IDRC’s evaluation cycle and to identify areas for improvement. On the whole, it was found that while IDRC evaluations have made progress in integrating GEI considerations, there is significant room for improvement. The key takeaways from this analysis across all indicators related to addressing GEI in the commissioning, conduct, reporting, and use of evaluations are summarized below. The analysis that underpins these, as well as the recommendations that emerge from them, are provided in the report and will serve to strengthen the practice of addressing GEI in IDRC-commissioned evaluations.

    Stories of change
    (AfricaAdapt, Dakar, SN, 2011-05) AfricaAdapt
Stories of Change come from participants of Meet and Greet events and the AfricaAdapt Symposium, and Climate Change Adaptation in Africa (CCAA)/ PAR (participatory action) researchers. Interviews and stories represent different districts and include male and female participants from local and regional organizations and groups. From one women’s group participant interview: "The performance on climate change awareness and environmental management has been very successful. We have excelled across the district. We are always invited to perform at functions organized at the district level where high-ranking officials are present. This has given our group and AfricaAdapt wide visibility."

Africa environment outlook (AEO 3) : our environment, our health; summary for policy makers
    (UNEP, 2013) Opio-Odongo, Joseph; Businge, Monday S.
The current issue of Africa Environment Outlook (AEO-3) focuses on linkages between environment and health, as environmental factors are estimated to contribute 28 per cent of Africa’s disease burden. It provides a concise outline of ongoing issues involving land, air, and water (with some beautiful images). This summary for Policy Makers as well as the AEO-3 main report provides information for evidence-based decision making and serves to prompt African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN) countries to strengthen capacity for policy making and advocacy at the national, regional and global levels.

Participatory action research to enhance the adaptive capacity of smallholder farmers to better respond to climate change and variability : synthesis report
    (2012)
This report draws from 26 projects that focus on the intersection between agriculture and climate change to better understand how climate stressors affect agricultural productivity, with the potential to exacerbate existing food insecurity and poverty. To facilitate adaptation to climate change, almost all the projects worked directly with farmers and their organizations. Results emphasize that Participatory Action Research (PAR) works best when it is implemented with full understanding of the context where it is delivered and with meticulous attention to methodology in that context. Change processes are slow, while yielding local solutions and community ownership of adaptation programs.
