Item Chagas disease : kissing bugs(Earth Chronicle Productions, 2010-03) Fenner, VictoriaThe article succinctly covers how chagas disease is transmitted, the physical effects over time, and how and why to prevent its spread. The parasite is called Trypanosoma cruzi, a protozoan contained in the “kissing bug’s” excrement. When a person is bit, the natural inclination is to scratch the bite, which ensures the protozoan gets into the bloodstream, causing Chagas disease. The inflammatory illness causes chronic disease over time leading to death.Item Cleaner water for rural Moroccan farmers : studying the effects of wastewater reuse; the case of Settat(Center for Development Services (CDS), Cairo, EG, 2007) Laamari, AbdelaliItem Cleaner water for rural Moroccan farmers : studying the effects of wastewater reuse; the case of Settat [Arabic version](Center for Development Services (CDS), Cairo, EG, 2007) Laamari, AbdelaliItem Combating diarrhea in rural Lebanon : understanding water, understanding health; the case of Bebnine(Center for Development Services (CDS), Cairo, EG, 2007) Ramzy, Mohamed; Nuwayhid, ImanItem Combating diarrhea in rural Lebanon : understanding water, understanding health; the case of Bebnine [Arabic version](Center for Development Services (CDS), Cairo, EG, 2007) Ramzy, Mohamed; Nuwayhid, ImanItem Diagrammatic approach to understanding complex eco-social interactions in Kathmandu, Nepal(Resilience Alliance, 2005) Neudoerffer, R. Cynthia; Waltner-Toews, David; Kay, James J.; Joshi, D. D.; Tamang, Mukta S.As part of developing an international network of community-based ecosystem approaches to health, a project was undertaken in a densely populated and socio-economically diverse area of Kathmandu, Nepal. Drawing on hundreds of pages of narrative reports based on surveys, interviews, secondary data, and focus groups by trained Nepalese facilitators, the authors created systemic depictions of relationships between multiple stakeholder groups, ecosystem health, and human health. These were then combined to examine interactions among stakeholders, activities, concerns, perceived needs, and resource states (ecosystem health indicators). These qualitative models have provided useful heuristics for both community members and research scholars to understand the eco-social systems in which they live; many of the strategies developed by the communities and researchers to improve health intuitively drew on this systemic understanding. The diagrams enabled researchers and community participants to explicitly examine relationships and conflicts related to health and environmental issues in their community.Item Documenting eco-health interventions in the MENA region : lake Nasser case study(Center for Development Services (CDS), Cairo, EG, 2007) Ramzy, MohamedItem Documenting eco-health interventions in the MENA region : lake Nasser case study [Arabic version](Center for Development Services (CDS), Cairo, EG, 2007) Ramzy, MohamedItem Ecohealth approach [Arabic language](Center for Development Services, Cairo, EG, 2008) Center for Development ServicesItem Ecohealth interventions limit triatomine reinfestation following insecticide spraying in La Brea, Guatemala(American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 2013-02) Lucero, David E.; Morrissey, Leslie A.; Rizzo, Donna M.; Rodas, Antonieta; Garnica, RobertoIn this study, we evaluate the effect of participatory Ecohealth interventions on domestic reinfestation of the Chagas disease vector Triatoma dimidiata after village-wide suppression of the vector population using a residual insecticide. The study was conducted in the rural community of La Brea, Guatemala between 2002 and 2009 where vector infestation was analyzed within a spatial data framework based on entomological and socio-economic surveys of homesteads within the village. Participatory interventions focused on community awareness and low-cost home improvements using local materials to limit areas of refuge and alternative blood meals for the vector within the home, and potential shelter for the vector outside the home. As a result, domestic infestation was maintained at ≤ 3% and peridomestic infestation at ≤ 2% for 5 years beyond the last insecticide spraying, in sharp contrast to the rapid reinfestation experienced in earlier insecticide only interventions.Item Ecosalud ETV Colombia, no. 1, diciembre de 2013 – febrero de 2014, revista trimestral(Ecosalud ETV Colombia, Centro de Estudios e Investigación en Salud (CEIS), Bogotá, CO, 2013) Contreras, Iliana; Ordoñez, Daira; Pérez, Elizabeth; Pinilla, Maria YanethItem Ecosystem approach to human health in rural Egypt : healthy ecosystem, healthy people; the case of El-Fayoum(Center for Development Services (CDS), Cairo, EG, 2007) Gaber, HeshamItem Ecosystem approach to human health in rural Egypt : healthy ecosystem, healthy people; the case of El-Fayoum [Arabic version](Center for Development Services (CDS), Cairo, EG, 2007) Gaber, HeshamItem Feeding ten billion(CBC, 2012) Kennedy, Paul; Patel, RajThe world just got its 7th billionth citizen, and the population explosion shows no signs of stopping. In a Saskatoon lecture, writer and activist Raj Patel argues that the only way to feed everyone is to completely rethink agriculture.Item Fighting diarrhea in the North Jordan valley : taking a closer look at this fragile ecosystem; the case of Sheikh Hussein(Center for Development Services (CDS), Cairo, EG, 2007) Ramzy, Mohamed; Ghazawi, ZiadItem Fighting diarrhea in the North Jordan valley : taking a closer look at this fragile ecosystem; the case of Sheikh Hussein [Arabic version](Center for Development Services (CDS), Cairo, EG, 2007) Ramzy, Mohamed; Ghazawi, ZiadItem Health : an ecosystem approach; documenting ecohealth interventions in the MENA region(Center for Development Services, Cairo, EG, 2008) Center for Development ServicesItem Healthy food for the picking kitchens and wild plants could be key to Lebanon's food security(Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada, Ottawa, ON, CA, 2010-03) Boothroyd, James“Healthy Kitchens” were established in different Lebanese villages by researchers based at the American University of Beirut. They are part of a food-security project funded by Canada’s International Development Research Centre. The team assessed the nutritional value of more than 40 wild edible plants, documented traditional dishes using them as ingredients, and proposed a list of healthy local foods that could improve diets at minimal cost. The study also found that villagers who pick wild edible plants and have gardens enjoy greater food security and better health. When cheap food began flooding into Lebanon, farming became unprofitable.
