It is seen to create a stabilizing presence in promoting leadership structures and social capital, and as well, of providing ‘livelihood support’ to community members. The CWP successfully introduced ‘Safe Manenberg’ campaigns such as a safety patrol on school premises to ensure that learners get to and from school safely. However, much gang-related violence continues. An integrated approach to development would require further investment in the CWP in order to strengthen the process of building social cohesion and social justice.Item Case study of the Ivory Park Community Work Programme (CWP)(Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR), Braamfontein, ZA, 2015-08) Masuku, ThembaIvory Park is a high-density residential area situated in the north-east of the City of Johannesburg, Region A. Most people live in a state of dire poverty. The area is geographically remote from stronger economic nodes in the city centre, and the settlement is plagued by myriad socio-economic challenges, including illiteracy, child-headed households and hopelessness. CWP participants design what work is to be done. A small stipend goes to those enrolled in the project. Through interviews with participants, it is learned that communication within and about the project, leadership issues, governance, and mistrust are the most problematic.Item Community Work Programme (CWP) in Grabouw(Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR), Braamfontein, ZA, 2015-10) Puwana, ZukiswaThere is a lack of understanding in the community of Grabouw about what the CWP is. There are no formal networking structures to facilitate collective action for the benefit of the community. Some interviewees felt that management had too much power, that there was a lack of accountability and a vulnerability to favouritism and nepotism. Over the years, the municipality has not played an active role in the CWP. Even though CWP has promoted trust and working together among participants, what we have seen about institutions working with CWP is that they work in isolation. Facilitating collective action is therefore difficult.Item Derechos Sexuales y Reproductivos, Inequidad Social y Política en América : first evaluation report(GIRE, 2009) Sánchez Fuentes, María LuisaItem Evaluation of IDRC Projects: Building Peace and Security Research Capacity in Eastern Africa and UPEACE - IDRC PhD Fellowships/UPEACE-IDRC Doctoral Research Awards (I and II) : final report(Center for Sustainable Governance, Lagos, NG, 2011-03) Onyejekwe, OkeyThe evaluation of the IDRC funded Peace, Conflict and Development Program (PCD) projects “Building Peace and Security Research Capacity in Eastern Africa”, and the Fellowships and Awards (F&A) Project “UPEACE – IDRC PhD Fellowships / UPEACE-IDRC Doctoral Research Awards” (I and II)” implemented by the University for Peace is aimed at assessing the design and impact of the projects to inform future programming. Item Final technical report / From War to Politics : Non-State Armed Groups in Transition, 2009-2011(Berghof Foundation, Berlin, DE, 2012) Dudouet, VéroniqueThe project undertook innovative research on content, timing, sequencing and ownership of security transitions from the perspective of conflict stakeholders who have made the shift from state challengers to peace- and state building agents. It aimed to analyse the successes and limitations of past or ongoing peacebuilding processes from the point of view of their ‘receiving end,’ by integrating the voice of insurgency movements and their demobilised militants. Nine country cases, namely, Colombia, South Africa, El Salvador, Northern Ireland, Kosovo, Burundi, South Sudan, Nepal and Aceh, were selected so that a comparative analysis exploring cross-country commonalities and local specificities could be drawn.Item Follow-up report on the Community Work Programme (CWP) in Bokfontein(Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR), Braamfontein, ZA, 2015-08) Langa, MaloseBokfontein was revisited in May 2014 as part of a study on the CWP being carried out by the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation. In this community, people worked in various projects such as road maintenance, gardening, home-based care, afterschool care, cutting grass, installing pipes for water, and working on the park. The community-based projects were found to be effective in facilitating peace, reconciliation and healing. Active involvement and support by municipal social workers has also contributed through connections to relevant government programs. Due to resultant delays, disillusionment and bureaucratic red tape, a three tier management system was replaced.Item Formes traditionnelles, formes nouvelles de l'engagement politique des jeunes femmes en contexte de transition : le cas de la Tunisie; résumé exécutif(Centre de la Femme Arabe pour la Formation et la Recherche (CAWTAR), Tunis, TN, 2013-07) Ben Salem, MaryamItem From combatants to peacebuilders : a case for inclusive, participatory and holistic security transitions; policy report(Berghof Foundation, Berlin, DE, 2012) Dudouet, Véronique; Giessmann, Hans J.; Planta, KatrinDrawing from nine cases of successful war-to-peace transitions, the book aims to identify common findings that can be generalized to various intra-state armed conflicts and post war contexts. It also presents context-specific findings for particular situations such as security transitions amidst ongoing conflict (Colombia) or in contexts of state formation (Southern Sudan, Kosovo). It spells out thematic challenges, lessons learned, and includes policy recommendations for managing volatile post war transitions as well as building more legitimate democratic and accountable political and security institutions.Item The good, the better and the best : how the Community Work Programme can reach its full potential as an instrument of community development in South Africa(Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR), Braamfontein, ZA, 2015-10) Bruce, DavidThe CWP was established in response to the structural nature of unemployment, as an employment safety net beneficial to community development. Management of CWP sites includes a wide range of tasks such as ensuring that communities participate in identification of useful work, that recruitment is done fairly, and that the site has the proper equipment and technical assistance to do quality work. The Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR) is a multi-disciplinary non-governmental organisation (NGO) involved in research, community interventions, and training. Its goal is to build reconciliation, democracy and a human rights culture.Item Harvesting feminist knowledge for public policy : rebuilding progress(IDRC, Ottawa, ON, CA, 2011) Jain, Devaki; Elson, DianeThis volume consists of 14 essays written in the context of the “triple crises” of food, fuel, and finance; the deep-seated problems of growing inequality; unpaid care work; and environmentally unsustainable patterns of economic growth. The authors argue that the very approach being taken to understand and measure progress, and to plan for and evaluate development, needs rethinking in ways that draw on the knowledge of women. It is the forms of production, paradigms, and institutions themselves that need transforming, both through changes in ideas that generate economic policies, and through social mobilization.Item Impact of the Community Work Programme (CWP) on violence in Orange Farm(Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR), Braamfontein, ZA, 2015-08) Langa, MaloseThe work done through CWP is decided through a participatory process that identifies ‘useful work’ that the community feels will contribute to the public good and improve the community’s quality of life. CWP management has had to be firm in resisting attempts to become politicized. Governance issues, leadership and nepotism are visible and somewhat anticipated problems that occur regularly. Support and partnership with the City of Johannesberg (CoJ) has widened CWP opportunities, and increased access to basic services as well as recently providing sports facilities. Crime patterns have changed. However, domestic violence remains a major problem
