Average land temperatures have increased by more than 1°C since pre-industrial times, sea levels are rising and extreme weather events, such as storms and droughts, are becoming more frequent. Further climate change is inevitable. Adapting to its impacts is essential for African societies to develop sustainably. CDKN has interviewed leading African scientists and climate change adaptation practitioners, to identify local solutions that can be learnt from and scaled up, to accelerate adaptation and contribute to a more climate-resilient future. This video will be shown during the Africa anchoring event of the Climate Adaptation Summit on 25th January 2021. Hosted by the Netherlands, the online international Climate Adaptation Summit (CAS) 2021 on 25 and 26 January convenes global leaders and local stakeholders. It will see the launch of a comprehensive Adaptation Action Agenda that sets out clear commitments to deliver concrete new endeavours and partnerships to make our world more resilient to the effects of climate change.Item Accroître le rôle des femmes dans la vaccination du bétail en Afrique de l’Est(2023) LE FONDS D’INNOVATION EN VACCINS POUR LE BÉTAIL (FIVB)Item Adaptation futures 2023 : design brief(2022-05) Brunetti, Aria; Huang, Ying-Syuan; Harvey, BlaneThe purpose of this design brief is to explore means of convening that favour socio-professional interactions, equity and sustainability for the upcoming Adaptation Futures 2023. Drawing from a scoping review, case studies of seven conferences and a targeted survey of climate, sustainability and environment academics and professionals, this report provides recommendations and considerations for planning an inclusive, equitable and impactful international conference.Item Adaptation gap report update 2023 : chapter 4, adaptation finance gap(2023-11) Watkiss, Paul; Chapagain, Dipesh; Savvidou, Georgia; Pauw, PieterThe adaptation finance gap is defined as the difference between the estimated costs of meeting a given adaptation target and the amount of finance available for adaptation (United Nations Environment Programme [UNEP] 2014). The AGR 2023 has undertaken a new and comprehensive analysis to estimate the adaptation finance gap for developing countries. Based on this analysis, this chapter compares the adaptation costs and finance needs against the current adaptation finance flows to estimate the size of the adaptation finance gap. It also considers the gender equality and social inclusion dimensions of adaptation costs, needs and finance. Finally, it discusses ways to potentially bridge the gap.Item Adaptation pathways to inform policy and practice in the context of development(Elsevier Ltd., 2023-01-03) Sparkes, Edward; Totin, Edmond; Werners, Saskia E.; Wise, Russell M.; Butler, James R.A.; Vincent, KatharineAdaptation pathways are a decision-focused approach to account for future uncertainties and complexities in planning and implementation of adaptation actions. The pathways approach incorporates flexibility into decision making to accommodate for changing conditions over time, and to reduce undesirable path dependencies and maladaptive consequences. While the pathways approach for adaptation planning has received great interest from both climate scientists and practitioners, there has been little specific guidance on how to implement them and how to sustain the resulting outcomes. Accordingly, pathways approaches include diversified methodologies, with scope for reorienting and adjusting methods for different decision contexts. This special issue explores both theoretical and empirical cases of adaptation pathways in different contexts. A learning framework on adaptation pathways has been developed from a systematic review of adaptation literature. In this editorial, the framework is used to characterize the twelve case studies presented in the special issue, followed by a synthesis of lessons which point to some critical research gaps in adaptation pathways.Item Adaptation research alliance : concept note(2021-07) Adaptation Research AllianceThe Adaptation Research Alliance (ARA) is an integral component of the Adaptation & Resilience (A&R) campaign, one of the priority areas for the COP26. The mission is to accelerate and scale investments in action-orientated research in developing countries. This Policy Brief outlines the scope of the ARA mission and plans for activities in action-based research. The ARA envisions a world by 2030 in which the research community is a highly valued partner to policymakers, practitioners and the most vulnerable communities, and engages effectively for the delivery of innovative, user-driven solutions for adaptation and resilience from the global to local levels.Item Adaptation voices : experts insights on how to accelerate adaptation in Africa - Claire Nasike Akello(2021-03-29) Climate and Development Knowledge NetworkThis film is part of a CDKN series, Adaptation Voices, that features insights from African experts on accelerating adaptation. The Oshana Region has been hard-hit by droughts in particular, which have drastically disrupted farming practices and people’s livelihoods. Exacerbating these climate change impacts are various non-climatic issues including unemployment and gender norms that already put women at risk. As part of the CDKN-funded project, Strengthening regional climate change governance through integrating gender-responsive climate action, the University of Namibia has produced a film that explores the experiences of community members in the Ongwediva constituency and documents the project activities.Item Advancing gender equality and climate action : a practical guide to setting targets and monitoring progress(2021-10-31) Dupar, Mairi; Velasco, Patricia; Climate and Development Knowledge NetworkCDKN, ODI, SNV, CARE and Mercy Corps have launched a new guide entitled Advancing gender equality and climate action: A practical guide to setting targets and monitoring progress. The partners created the guide because they heard a common refrain from project managers: 'we have to integrate gender into our climate project, but we don't know exactly how to do it!' Advancing gender equality and climate action is geared to helping project managers develop appropriate gender-related targets and a suitable Monitoring, Evaluating and Learning (MEL) system to track achievement over time. The guide complements CDKN's training materials, including PowerPoint packs and serious fun games on gender and social inclusion in climate projects.Item Advancing women’s participation in livestock vaccine value chains(2023) Livestock Vaccine Innovation Fund (LVIF)Small livestock are vital to women and their communities for food security and income. To ensure vaccination programs succeed and animals stay healthier, much needs to be learned about who in society knows about and has access to animal vaccines, the barriers women face in participating in vaccine value chains and how vaccination can become more widespread.Item Agenda for action - transitioning to a healthy sustainable food system in Latin America(2022-02-14) Longhi, Lorenza; Azevedo, Alan; Bortoletto, Ana Paula; Giuberti, JanineThe project identified four key priorities to be developed in order to drive forward food systems transformation: 1) collaborating across multiple sectors; 2) broadening alliances and strengthening evidence-based approaches; 3) food governance based on human rights; 4) strengthening the regulatory role of states, and preventing corporate interference. These priorities underly the Agenda for Action developed by the Brazilian Institute for Consumer’s Defense (Instituto Brasileiro de Defesa do Consumidor/ Idec). The project aims towards an integrated evidence-based agenda for action towards healthy and sustainable food systems in Latin America that prioritize healthy affordable diets, while keeping greenhouse gases emissions within sustainable limits.
