Item Cuatro principios rectores para el escalamiento del impacto(2020-04) McLean, Robert; Gargani, JohnItem Design plan : evaluation of IDRC's strategy to scale research results(2020-02) Hearn, SImon; Lomofsky, Dena; Ball, LouiseThis evaluation report proposes an assessment methodology that focuses on how, and how well, the IDRC implemented its 2015 strategic objective ‘to invest in knowledge and innovation for large-scale positive change.’ It will identify lessons and recommendations to inform and strengthen IDRC’s future work, and that of others in the sector involved in appropriate scaling of research results.Item En bref : La science de la mise à l’échelle(2020-04-06)Item En breve: Ciencia de la ampliación de la escala(2020-04-06) McLean, Robert; Gorgani, JohnItem Escalar el impacto de la innovación y la investigación : un llamado a la acción desde el Sur Global(2022-03) Chaminuka, Petronella; Llorente, Blanca; Rincón, Tatiana; Syed, AbuItem Escalar el impacto de la innovación y la investigación : un llamado a la acción desde el Sur Global - en resumen(2022-03) Chaminuka, Petronella; Llorente, Blanca; Rincón, Tatiana; Syed, AbuItem Getting scaling into research : considering the four guiding principles throughout the research process(2020-04) McLean, Robert; Gargani, JohnThis one-pager aims to focus new researchers on the processes and questions that will impact findings and outcomes of their research: “While doing research, researchers might ask: What evidence is needed to determine optimal scale? How will we involve stakeholders in data collection, analysis/synthesis, and interpretation? What key moments can we foresee for learning and adaptation?” A link is provided to scaling science: https://www.idrc.ca/en/research-in-action/scaling-science.Item In brief: Scaling Science(2020-04-06) McLean, Robert; Gargani, JohnScaling Science is an approach for designing, managing, and evaluating research for impact. The objective is scaling impact for the public good. Whereas discovery science is about the creation of new knowledge and applied science investigates the conversion of that knowledge into action, scaling science is concerned with the optimization of the magnitude, variety, equity and sustainability of impacts. This 3-page policy brief expands on principles of scaling science and scaling impact. Inspired by leading scientific and entrepreneurial innovators from across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, and the Middle East, this book presents a synthesis of unrivaled diversity and grounded ingenuity. The result is a different perspective on how to achieve impact that matters, and an important challenge to the predominant more-is-better paradigm of scaling. For organizations and individuals working to change the world for the better, scaling impact is a common goal and a well-founded aim. The world is changing rapidly, and seemingly intractable problems like environmental degradation or accelerating inequality press us to do better for each other and our environment as a global community. Challenges like these appear to demand a significant scale of action, and here the authors argue that a more creative and critical approach to scaling is both possible and essential. To encourage uptake and co-development, the authors present actionable principles that can help organisations and innovators design, manage, and evaluate scaling strategies. Scaling Impact is essential reading for development and innovation practitioners and professionals, but also for researchers, students, evaluators, and policymakers with a desire to spark meaningful change.Item Scaling impact : training course pack for IDRC grantees(2022) IDRC; On Think Tanks (OTT)“Scaling impact” is a coordinated effort to achieve impacts at optimal scale, undertaken only when morally justified and warranted by evidence. The scaling impact training course pack, includes the agenda for the training, a summary of key concepts, instructions to the exercises, resources, and further reading. The term “scaling science” embraces two meanings: 1) Science of scaling: Empirical, systematic understanding of scaling and how it can increase the likelihood that innovations will benefit society; 2) Scaling scientific research results: An approach to scaling the results of scientific research to achieve impacts that matter. “Scaling impact” challenges common conceptions of scaling.Item Scaling impact training for IDRC grantees : facilitator’s manual(2022) IDRC; On Think Tanks (OTT)The manual outlines the training approach, structure, materials required, session content and suggestions for running the training. It focuses on the evidence-informed, principles-based approach to scaling impact, and accompanying guidance on how to put the principles into action in research projects. Four guiding principles for the training are: justification, optimal scale, coordination, and dynamic evaluation. The training sessions take an experiential approach by prioritizing practical exercises, reflection, case study reviews and peer discussion, so that participants learn by doing. The two sessions of training can be delivered in either an in-person or online setting.Item Scaling impact : training for IDRC grantees(2022) IDRCThe training takes an experiential approach by prioritizing practical exercises, reflection, case study reviews and peer discussion, so that participants learn by doing. The two sessions of training can be delivered in either an in-person or online setting. The presentation provides the slides/training deck for Sessions 1 & 2. It also introduces “The Scaling Playbook” which helps guide application of the training concepts to participants’ own research.Item Scaling playbook : a practical guide for researchers(IDRC, 2020-04) Price-Kelly, Hayley; van Haeren, Leonie; McLean, RobertSuccessfully scaling impact requires reflection on the four guiding principles: justification, optimal scale, coordination, and dynamic evaluation. Pathways to impact are winding, systems are complex, and scaling involves a multiplicity of actors. This playbook presents an evidence-based and action-oriented guide for approaching the challenges of scaling for impact. Its aim is to assist researchers in integrating scaling into research. Scaling means understanding how to position research results so that the solutions generated reach the people who can use them, and in a way they can endorse.
