Item Accelerating the transition toward a triple-impact economy through sustainable public procurement (SPP) : final technical report(2020-05-06) Organization of American States / Inter-American Network on Government Procurement (OAS/INGP) Technical SecretariatThe project revealed that the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region still faces major technical, political, regulatory, and budgetary roadblocks preventing LAC countries from being able to handle sustainability criteria more smoothly. Most officials involved in public procurement institutions in LAC were not familiar with the concept of triple-impact economies nor with purpose-driven businesses. Activities and results of the project are outlined, with country-specific details. Activities included training members of the Inter-American Network on Government Procurement (INGP) to position public procurement as a tool for sustainable development in the region. Evidence shows the region is characterized already by substantive work on social sustainability.Item Active youth in the peace building process in Colombia(2018-09-27) Fundación capitalA peace agreement was signed with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia—People's Army (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia, FARC) in 2016, with many young people affected by past conflicts. The Jovenes Activos/Active Youth project aimed to address gaps in services and service organizations for youth, engaging youth in the peacebuilding process. Results show that B Corps from different countries are not very different among themselves. This suggests that the B Lab is currently successful in constructing uniform gender-representativity criteria for companies from all over the world despite cultural and contextual differences. B Corporations are purpose-driven companies that are certified by B Lab, and focused on stimulating businesses to improve their social and environmental practices.Item Are b-corps ready to be a gateway to the job market for women and young people in Latin America? : a prospective study of Argentina, Chile and Uruguay(2020-03-03) Kaufmann, Ricardo; Pérez, Gabriela; Sobral, GonzaloThe document presents findings regarding the type and quality of the impact that B-Corps and Purpose-Driven Companies (PDC) have in the inclusion of women and youth in Latin America. This study investigates whether B-Corps are a genuine means of employability for these two groups so that future strategies can be effectively designed in terms of public policy. B Corporation (also B Lab or B Corp) certification of "social and environmental performance" is a private certification of for-profit companies, distinct from the legal designation as a Benefit corporation. B Corp certification is conferred by B Lab in Latin America with Sistema B.Item Assessing women empowerment in Tanzania : the case of the productive social safety net (PSSN)(2019-01) REPOAThe study adapts the Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI) approach, using panel data sets to carry out an assessment of the Productive Social Safety Net (PSSN) programme implemented by the Tanzania Social Action Fund (TASAF). Although the PSSN Programme is not primarily designed as a programme for promoting gender equality, findings indicate positive influences on livelihoods of female recipients and on improving gender relations. Social norms/patriarchy still limit the role that such interventions can play to enhance women’s leadership in communities. The PSSN programme includes conditional cash transfers, public works, and livelihood enhancement.Item Beyond impact measurement : fostering inclusion through the “poverty stoplight”(2020-06-30) Hammler, Katharina“Poverty Stoplight” is both a metric and a methodology. Program staff works directly with families in poor communities to complete an easy-to-use, picture-based survey to evaluate poverty levels across a variety of dimensions and indicators. Indicators are self-assessed by the individuals and families who participate, creating data from the bottom up; the method includes measures of agency and organization, is designed to include only indicators that are actionable and; the survey is designed to empower individuals completing the self-assessment, particularly female heads of households. The report details methodology, activities, outputs and outcomes of the project.Item Bias in, bias out : gender and work in the platform economy(2021-05-21) Athreya, BamaThis paper focuses on historically rooted gender divisions of labour that are replicated and even amplified in the digital economy, and particularly work in platform-mediated/online and virtual spaces. It highlights historical parallels to previous technological shifts, as well as the interplay between these shifts and existing gender norms, and structural bias in labour markets. It also highlights the dangers of algorithmic bias, which may exacerbate and disguise gender discrimination. Without scrutiny of the complex interrelationship between technology and culture, the introduction of new technologies will not correct longstanding power imbalances.Item Biophysical identification in eco-centric enterprises(2016-11-22) Muñoza, Pablo; Branzei, OanaThe article introduces the concept of regenerative enterprises, defined as ecologically-embedded businesses that restore and regenerate degraded natural ecosystems, while building resilience and wellbeing of local communities. The research is place-based and draws on a multi-sited rapid ethnographic (MSRE) design. The site was a Chilean organic and biodynamic vinery. The work focused on understanding eco-centric practices and decision-making within the everyday world of the firm. A de-natured view of organizations is prominent in sustainable entrepreneurship research, situating the bio-capacity needed to propel ventures as a peripheral circle, despite the growing emphasis on environmental protection.Item BRAC-CEGA learning collaborative - supporting graduation programs through empirical evidence and leadership promotion : final technical report(2020-06) Sulaiman, Munshi; Khakshi, JamesThe collaboration between BRAC (Building Resources Across Communities) and CEGA (Center for Effective Global Action) helped to share BRAC learnings with a wide research and development community and contributed to BRAC’s long term goal of institutionalizing the use of evidence in creating opportunities for economic growth and wellbeing among those living in extreme poverty. This report provides the details of activities accomplished under the project while focusing on substantive achievements and lessons learned. BRAC is the largest development NGO in the world, providing almost 140 million people globally with empowerment and livelihood programs, financial services, and health care.Item Building economic complexity in Africa(2019) Bhorat, Haroon; Rooney, Christopher; Steenkamp, FrançoisThe paper reports on and summarizes four country case studies (Ghana, Kenya, Senegal and South Africa) in terms of: the degree and extent of economic complexity; a detailed product space analysis; firm interviews to identify what prevents or enables firms to diversify; and the employment potential associated with frontier products. Economic complexity and product space analytics identify potential avenues for economic diversification or frontier products. Building economic complexity, or accumulating productive knowledge, is associated with the process of structural transformation – shifts from less complex low productivity activities toward high productivity and more complex activities and products.
