Item Public procurement and women’s economic empowerment in East Africa : challenges and opportunities(2020) Williams, Sope; Dhar, Diva; Mulema, Annet Abenakyo; Melesse, MarthaAs public procurement often involves large sums of money, many countries use their procurement spend to achieve varied policy goals beyond the purchase of the required goods and services. These policy goals include matters like the economic advancement of minorities or disadvantaged groups, or the promotion of fair labour practices and climate action. In recent times, countries have begun using procurement systems to advance gender equality. This is referred to as gender-responsive procurement and is defined by UN Women as the selection of services, goods and civil works that considers their impact on gender equality and women’s empowerment (UN Women, 2022). The OECD describes it as the introduction of gender requirements and considerations into public procurement policies and practices (OECD, 2021a), whilst the European Institute for Gender Equality defines it as “procurement that promotes gender equality through the purchase of works, supplies or services by public sector bodies. This means that buyers and suppliers look at the impact of all the contracted activities related to women’s and men’s interests and concerns and design and deliver contracts in a way that reduces gender inequalities” (European Institute for Gender Equality, 2022).Item Impact de la COVID-19 au Sénégal : un état des lieux(2020-12) Ahoure, AlbanItem Enhancing agribusiness economic opportunities of rural women and girls in Uganda(2021) Centre for Basic ResearchIn terms of economic empowerment, agribusiness can act as an engine of livelihood enhancement, playing a fundamental role in promoting agricultural households to engage in value addition. Project results reveal that trained women and youths statistically and significantly participate in poultry keeping, goats rearing and trade, especially in farm produce. After training, participants significantly participated in growing millet, sweet potatoes, cassava, cow peas, beans, groundnuts, choroko, tomatoes, and citrus. Results also provide justification for education and/or training in agribusiness activities, which should include improved farming practices and crops that can provide agibusiness potential in a particular region.Item Enhancing social protection : a global South priority for the G20 agenda(2021-02-23) Ordóñez, Andrea; te Velde, Dirk WillemCOVID-19 has been a tough test for the international cooperation system. Indeed, the pandemic has been exerting pressure on the economy through both global and domestic shocks leading to a detrimental impact on major macroeconomic correlates of the country. The present study urges that Bangladesh will need to pursue a countercyclical fiscal policy stance in the face of deceleration in aggregate demand. The study further maintains that greater fiscal resources should be directed towards those people, households and enterprises having a higher propensity to consume and invest. From this perspective, the study strongly advocates for direct cash transfers, food support, and enhanced public expenditures in health and education rather than a general increase in public expenditures and subsidised credit flow.Item Role of business in achieving the sustainable development goals in the global south : breadth and depth strategies of B corps in pursuing SDGs learning from north and south(2021-12-31) Bandini, Federica; Boni, Leonardo; Fia, Magalì; Pellegrini, Michele; Toschi, Laura; Rivera, Igor; De Leon, Denise DiazDespite the urgency to achieve sustainable objectives, institutional actors and private organizations do not share a guidance on which SDGs have to be in the agenda of companies. To do this, a comparative analysis is carried out between developed “north” countries’ B Corps, and developing “south” countries’ B Corps, in order to provide dedicated policy implications of social and entrepreneurial relevance.Item En qué medida el SUS aumentó el acceso a los servicios de salud en Bolivia(2022) Gabriela Alondra AgafiteiItem Mujeres rurales en el sector de la quinua cambios logros y desafíos(2022) Romero, DanielaItem Empleos verdes y agricultura sostenible(2022) INESADItem Shaping macro economy in response to COVID-19 in Kenya : a responsible economic stimulus and a stable financial sector(Institute of Economic Affairs, 2022) Institute of Economic AffairsKenya experienced overall macro stability and modest growth of 5.5% for the period 2017 to 2019. The onset of COVID 19 pandemic in March 2020 however subdued the economy owing to swift containment measures that were imposed to limit the spread of the pandemic. As a result, Kenya suffered its first recession in nearly two decades. The government responded fast by instituting a broad range of macroeconomic policy interventions. It launched the 8-Point Economic Stimulus Programme targeted towards building back a better and resilient economy. This policy was chosen to estimate the socio-economic effects of the stimulus. Using available evidence of fiscal multipliers, we came up with three scenarios: (i) untargeted total expansionary fiscal stimulus and (ii) targeted sectoral public spending and (iii) hypothetical reallocation to targeted sectoral with high multiplier effect. Results of the scenario building exercise highlight that fiscal stimulus could contribute to Kenya’s growth over the short-term, but the impact greatly improves if measures are targeted to sectors with higher multiplier effects. In medium to long term, focus on environment and green investment could result to higher socio-economic effects.Item Impacts des politiques publiques liées à la pandémie du COVID-19 sur le secteur informel, les femmes et les jeunes : cas du Burkina Faso, du Cameroun, de la Côte-d’Ivoire et du Sénégal - contexte et évolution de la COVID-19 au Burkina Faso(2022-06) Université Thomas Sankara, Laboratoire d’Analyse Quantitative Appliquée au Développement du Sahel (LAQAD-S)Item Promoción del ahorro y ahorro previsional voluntario : revisión de la literatura(2022-06) Carlos Gustavo Machicado S.Item National fuel pass - roadblocks to inclusion(2022-07-22) Amarasinghe, TharakaIn 2022, the Ministry of Power and Energy in Sri Lanka launched the National Fuel Pass – a QR code-based system to tackle the ongoing and ever worsening queues for purchase fuel in Sri Lanka.
