The presentation outlines challenges of climate change in sustainable development in terms of natural hazards, such as cyclones, windstorms, and extreme temperatures. Graphics show distribution of natural disaster fatalities by country and type of phenomenon. The presentation points to future calamities and the need for mitigation strategies.Item Rapport de synthèse de sessions plenières de l'atelier de développement des capacités CRDI/ACCA en evaluation integrée des risques climatiques(AGRHYMET, Niamey, NE, 2007) Badiane, DaoudaItem IDRC/CCAA Capacity Building Workshop on "Integrated Climate Risk Assessment" : workshop training manual(ICPAC, Nairobi, KE, 2007) Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC); University of Cheikh Anta Diop (UCAD)The Integrated Climate Risk Assessment workshop was held in Nairobi (2007). This manual is a compilation of materials that were used at the workshop. Topics covered in the Modules include: General Concepts of Climate Risk Management; Methods and Tools for Integrated Climate Risk Management; Adaptation strategies; Mainstreaming Climate Risk Management in development policies; Capacity and benefits of CCAA funded projects. The Climate Change Adaptation in Africa (CCAA) programme aims to significantly improve the capacity of African countries to adapt to climate change in ways that benefit the most vulnerable.Item Institutional framework in relation to climate change in West and Central Africa : final report(Université Cheikh Anta Diop, Dakar, SN, 2007) Niang, IsabelleItem IDRC/CCAA Capacity Building Workshop on "Integrated Climate Risk Assessment" 27-31 August 2007, Nairobi : workshop report(IGAD Climate Prediction and Application Centre (ICPAC), Nairobi, KE, 2007) Oludhe, Chris; IAGD Climate Prediction and Application Centre (ICPAC); University of Cheikh Diop (UCAD)In spite of the many commonalities shared by countries in Africa and the fact that some belong to regional economic and political groupings, there is little common practice and sharing of adaptation experience. There are many reasons why a shared regional approach to adaptation makes sense. The workshop covered the science of climate change, vulnerability and adaptation assessments and research methods.Item Building adaptive capacity to cope with increasing vulnerability due to climate change : report of the Inception Workshop, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, 7-8 June 2007(Midlands State University, Gweru, ZW, 2007) Mugabe, FrancisParticipants at the inception workshop included officials from universities, meteorological offices, and extension services from Zambia and Zimbabwe, as well as scientists from various international organizations. The objectives were to familiarize participants with farmers’ perceptions of climate change, as well as with current work on adaptation to climate change. This report provides detailed summaries of the presentations and discussions at the meeting, such as current coping strategies, reliability of meteorological data, Agromet information dissemination, precipitation changes, and farmer’s perceptions of climate quality.Item Elements of a regional climate change adaptation strategy based on the risk sharing approach : West Africa; final report(Author, Dakar, SN, 2007) Niasse, MadiodioItem Workshop inception report of the project "Strengthening Local Agricultural Innovation Systems in Less Favoured and High Potential Areas of Tanzania and Malawi", held in Bagamoyo, Tanzania, 11-16 June, 2007(University of Dar es Salaam, Dar es Salaam, TZ, 2007) Majule, Amos; Institute of Resource Assessment (IRA), University of Dar es SalaamTanzania is hosting a four year program established to address climate change adaptation issues in Africa, and those related to the capacity building of African scientists and other stakeholders. This report presents the deliberations and plans of project team members at the project inception workshop. The goal is to strengthen the capacity of individuals and organizations within agricultural innovation in less favoured areas (semi-arid Central Zone Tanzania and Chikwawa/Karonga, Malawi) and more favoured areas (Southern Highlands, Tanzania and Mulanje/Mzimba Malawi) of Tanzania and Malawi, to adapt to challenges arising from climate change and variability.Item Final report on CCAA Outcome Mapping Workshop (September 10-14, 2007)(IDRC, Ottawa, ON, CA, 2007) Kelpin, KevinThe Outcome Mapping (OM) process assists in project monitoring, evaluation, and tracking achievement of outcomes. Climate Change Adaptation in Africa Program (CCAA) education and training activities are delivered through workshops, hands-on training awards and Fellowships. One of the CCAA training activities is “Training on Research Project Management.” As part of this specific training activity, the consultant facilitated a workshop on the monitoring and evaluation methodology, Outcome Mapping. Partner organization team members worked together in groups to produce an OM framework specific to the their CCAA supported project.Item Partnership between CCAA and Organizations Representing At-Risk Groups, Dakar, July 26-27, 2007 : workshop report(IDRC, Dakar, SN, 2007) Kaeré, Alioune Badara; Denton, FatimaThe Climate Change Adaptation in Africa (CCAA) program seeks to give local organizations the opportunity to participate in identifying root problems and their solutions based on the participatory principles of action research. Thirteen participants attended this workshop from institutions representing West African Community-based organizations. The aim was to learn the positions of grassroots organizations and their administrative needs, in order to offer adaptation practices that meet the needs of vulnerable groups, and that can support grass-roots organizations as well as local farmers.Item Lack of resilience in African smallholder farming : exploring measures to enhance the adaptive capacity of local communities to pressure climate change; a synthesis report of the Project Inception Workshop held July 10-12 2007, Harare, Zimbabwe(University of Zimbabwe, Harare, ZW, 2007) University of Zimbabwe, Soil Fertility Consortium for Southern Africa; Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Engineering (SOFECSA); Mapfumo, PaulThe report is a synthesis of the inception workshop where all collaborating partners were represented. The project works with smallholder farmers in identifying and using improved farming technologies, and to enhance the capacity of participating institutions and individual researchers to conduct and manage research and development, using integrated soil fertility management (ISFM) and livelihoods as entry points. The planning workshop aimed at fostering a shared understanding of project objectives, activities and anticipated outputs among major partners in order to enable development of operational plans. Each country team is responsible for their own work plan details, drawn from workshop proceedings and insights.Item Workshop report : ACCCA-IDRC Inception Workshop Dakar, Senegal 14-16 November 2007(UNITAR, Geneva, CH, 2007) United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR)The inception workshop report covers activities and presentations made by participants; the rationale behind the Advancing Capacity to Support Climate Change Adaptation (ACCCA) project; its mission; and its objectives. It was noted that science has not been successful in offering sustainable solutions to the climate change challenge; the science hasn't been able to translate knowledge and know-how into local language. The GIS-based, spatial information tool (AWhere) was presented so teams might better identify climate risk hot spots, map areas of vulnerability, and identify potential adaptation options. Gendered dimensions of climate change, and outcome mapping topics were also included.
