This book examines issues that depend critically on the analysis of quantitative indicators of gender bias. In the language of econometrics, ‘gender' is a 'latent' variable, in principle unobserved and unobservable. At best, some overt manifestations might be captured. Thus, any analysis of gender bias in complex socio-economic situations, must pay close attention to context. The book focuses on results of coordinated household surveys carried out in four countries of South Asian households of women working in Export Processing Zones or Export Oriented Units.Item African voices on structural adjustment : a companion to "Our continent, our future"(IDRC, Ottawa, ON, CA, 2003) Mkandawire, Thandika; Soludo, Charles C.The book calls for a critical appraisal of the structural adjustment program (SAP) as development strategy. There is a growing call for local ownership of adjustment and for Africans to assume the leading role in defining the continent's development agenda. Selected papers for this volume include: critical evaluation of the model and methodologies for performance evaluation under SAP; comparative development experiences; trade liberalization and regional integration; SAP, technology, and industrialization in Africa; poverty under adjustment; reforms, external and domestic factors, and implications for agriculture and rural development; and financial sector reforms and resource mobilization.Item Mainstreaming informal employment and gender in poverty reduction : a handbook for policy - makers and other stakeholders(IDRC, Ottawa, ON, CA, 2004) Alter Chen, Martha; Vanek, Joann; Carr, MarilynItem Politics of trade and industrial policy in Africa : forced concensus?(IDRC, Ottawa, ON, CA, 2004) Soludo, Charles C.; Ogbu, Osita; Ha-Joon ChangGiven that most African countries are heavily indebted and aid dependent, as well as members of the WTO, the broad and specific choices of trade and industrial policies have increasingly been tailored to meet the demands of the Bretton Woods Institutions and the WTO. What has therefore emerged as the broad consensus on the nature of trade and industrial policies is rather a forced consensus. These case studies and papers make compelling arguments for selective trade and industrial policies in Africa, pointing very strongly to lessons of experience from the industrializing East Asian countries.
