Outcome Mapping
The Evaluation Unit and a number of IDRC programs worked with Barry Kibel of the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation to adapt his Outcome Engineering approach to the development research context. In 2001, a methodology called "Outcome Mapping" was developed, which characterizes and assesses the contributions development programs make to achieving outcomes. Outcome Mapping can be used at the program, project, or organizational level.

Evaluation UnitThis publication includes valuable insights into the theory and practice of outcome mapping (OM), useful to researchers who want to know more about how to apply OM. Following a broad overview, there are specific discussions and summaries organised with a visual representation of the discussion, the message which initiated the discussion, responses received from community members, and finally concluding remarks and suggestions for actions.Item How to organize an outcome mapping training workshop(Evaluation Unit, IDRC, Ottawa, ON, CA, 2007-09) IDRC. Evaluation UnitThe material covers every step in the organization of a training workshop, from selecting a venue, determining facilitators, sending out logistical information, preparing curriuclum, to the last details of setting up things like name tags and parking directions. To organize an effective workshop requires time and effort. These checklists and pointers cover every dimension in organizing and preparing for a training workshop.Item Outcome mapping : building learning and reflection into development programs [Arabic version](IDRC, Ottawa, ON, CA, 2008) Earl, Sarah; Carden, Fred; Smutylo, TerryItem Outcome Mapping Learning Community : final technical report(Overseas Development Institute, London, GB, 2008-02) Ramalingam, Ben; Mendizabal, Enrique; Jones, HarryItem Conceptual fusion of the logical framework approach and outcome mapping(Outcome Mapping Learning community (OMLC), 2009-05) Ambrose, Kaia; Roduner, DanielThis paper describes the rational for and the process of creating a fusion model incorporating OM and LFA. And while it has been used successfully for both purposes, this brief focuses on OM as a monitoring and evaluation (M&E) approach. In particular, many users identified a need for clearer guidelines on how to make OM M&E more functional and constructive. This brief, based on various events, papers, workshops and conversations on the Outcome Mapping Learning Community (OMLC), attempts to respond to this need.Item Module on Step-0 : how to prepare for OM intentional design(Outcome Mapping Learning community (OMLC), 2009-10) Roduner, Daniel; Hartmann, OliviaExisting manuals make a lot of implicit assumptions about processes and preparations that have taken place before actually applying the OM approach. The process of using Outcome Mapping to construct the change management framework (CMF) involved mobilization of planning and assessment teams (Project Steering Committee and Change Management Taskforce). The process was guided and facilitated by an external consultant. The study reports on this process. Through the adoption and adaptation of Outcome Mapping (OM), the PM&E process has become embedded in the program management cycles and informs future planning. A monitoring and evaluation process facilitates opportunities to allow incorporation of emerging lessons, new responses to the environment, examination of intended and unintended results, and actively refining implementation strategies of the program. Using OM, St2eep developed a two-way monitoring system.Item Foire aux questions (FAQ) : cartographie des incidences(Section de l'évaluation, CRDI, Ottawa, ON, CA, 2010) CRDI.
