In Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, where the Network’s Pietermaritzburg centre is located, there are segments of the population in which HIV prevalence has reached 45 percent. Each month, at the Lifeline Rape Crisis Centre in Poetermaritzburg, 100 rape victims present themselves for care and support. Thirty-six percent of them test positive for HIV. Barriers to conducting effective and preventative research in Africa can be overcome by building strong, sustainable partnerships. The CAPT Network shows that this sustainability can be achieved with a modest amount of basic infrastructure funding.Text1 digital file (various pagings) : ill.enAIDSPROPHYLAXISVACCINESTESTINGPREVENTION TRIALSRESEARCH CAPACITY STRENGTHENINGSUB-SAHARAN AFRICACanada-Africa prevention trials (CAPT) network : final technical report to GHRIIDRC Final Report
