IDRC-supported research indicates that women’s use of financial services will increase if services and products meet their needs and address gender-based constraints. Access-focused approaches often overlook other factors that are key to effective financial inclusion; women also need to be able to leverage financial products and services. It is not easy to shift behavioural and cultural norms, but well-designed, strategically implemented financial products and services can play a role, along with effective regulations.application/pdfenWOMEN’S ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENTWOMEN’S ADVANCEMENTWOMEN ENTREPRENEURSEMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIESFINANCIAL INCLUSIONRESEARCH TO POLICYFINANCIAL POLICYBANKINGACCESS TO RESOURCESFINANCIAL SERVICESIDRCGLOBAL SOUTHEmpowering women through financial inclusion : better access is just the first stepPolicy Brief
