The paper explores current options (2005) for cell phone and internet connectivity, including an example of the impact of a combined Satellite and Wi-Fi system in El-Chaco in Ecuador – with just three initial connection points the impact could be felt immediately. Wi-Fi in combination with VSAT technology can be a cost-effective way to connect rural communities. As one local woman expressed it: “I feel like El Chaco is for the first time on the map.”1 digital fileenINFORMATION TECHNOLOGYTELECOMMUNICATIONS NETWORKSINFORMATION CENTRESSTRATEGIC PLANNINGLATIN AMERICACARIBBEANLOCAL AREA NETWORKSCOMMUNICATION SATELLITESMOBILE PHONESWIRELESS TECHNOLOGYCONNECTIVITYWEST INDIESDIGITAL INCLUSIONSATELLITE BROADCASTINGINTERNETConnectivity options for LAC : the quiet Wi-Fi revolutionIDRC Final Report
