Nieftagodien, Noor2007-11-132007-02-022007-11-132006http://hdl.handle.net/10625/27494In his review of the book "Transitioning out of violence: snapshots from Kathorus" by Vanessa Barolsky, the reviewer suggests the analysis be extended further back in time, to include a discussion of cyclical violence in the townships in the 1980s as well as the idea of generational conflicts. Kathorus was a site of atrocious violence in the period prior to South Africa’s first democratic election. Barolsky’s analytical framework is based on an international body of literature on power and violence that has hitherto had little bearing on analyses of violence in South Africa. It suggests that nation-building is deeply implicated in violence.1 digital fileenVIOLENCEPEACE RESEARCHCONFLICTSCONFLICT RESOLUTIONDISPUTE SETTLEMENTSOUTH AFRICATOWNSHIPSAPARTHEIDSOUTH OF SAHARAPOLITICAL POWERNATION BUILDINGVanessa Barolsky, "Transitioning out of violence : snapshots from Kathorus"; reviewWorking Paper
