Contract farming is one arrangement that operates as an intermediary institution between spot markets and vertical integration. The report stresses the importance of contract farming with agro-processing companies and the barriers to entry for small-scale farmers. Securing pro-poor relationships between farmers and agro-processors will rely on institutions at large, not on contract agriculture exclusively.Text1 digital file (29 p.)enSMALLHOLDERSFARMERSPOVERTY ALLEVIATIONECONOMIC GROWTHHORTICULTUREINFORMAL SECTORFORMAL SECTORDEALERSURBANIZATIONAFRICACase studies of agri-processing and contract agriculture in AfricaRimisp - Latin American Center for Rural Development in the WDR2008 "Agriculture for Development" : assessment of its influence; final report; annex 1, documents commissioned by Rimisp for the WDR 2008IDRC Final Report
