Abstract

A major accomplishment of the “Sustainable Improvement of Marginal Lands in Lebanon” project was to help communities in Lebanon’s poor Arsaal district overcome social strife and chart a new course toward the sustainable use of overstretched resources. But in the process, it had unexpected impacts: contributing to the revival of a moribund municipal government and prompting Lebanese researchers and international donors to adopt a new approach to environmental research.
