This paper discusses approaches to agroforestry under the African Highlands Initiative (AHI) which make explicit the trade-offs inherent in species selection of trees, highlighting approaches through which more nuanced and socially-informed agroforestry may evolve. The findings from methods developed in agroforestry emphasize results of the research towards increasing niche-compatible species and reducing the niche-incompatible species in two benchmark sites: Lushoto, in the East Usambara Mountains of Tanzania and Galessa, in Western Shewa Zone, Ethiopia.en
