The economy of most households in coastal villages of Tanzania is essentially subsistence based, and artisanal fishing is by far the most important economic activity. A national coastal community workshop was held in Tanga (2008). The Wavuvi wadogo wadogo community presented aims, activities and issues of concern, along with recommendations for ensuring good governance in order to deter overfishing through illegal means that result in loss of marine biodiversity, declining fish catch rates, degradation of breeding grounds and fish nurseries, and a reduction in incomes. The workshops give coastal communities an opportunity to interact and to articulate their needs.en
