dc.description.abstractEven though it has unanimously been accepted worldwide that climate changes have greater impacts on sustainable socio-economic development, research on its major impacts and measures to mitigate and to adapt in Sudan remain very stumpy. In Sudan, besides increasing frequency and severity of droughts and floods, the periodic shift in onset of the rains, and increasing intensity of mid-season dry spells in the last 40 years, climate change is considered an additional constraint to sustainable socio-economic development. Sudan forest ecosystems play a greater role in socio-economic development. They provide many goods and services that society values, including food, marketable timber and non-wood products (fuel, fiber, construction material), medicines, biodiversity, regulation of biogeochemical cycles, soil and water conservation (erosion prevention), carbon reservoirs, recreation, research opportunities, and spiritual and cultural values. Forests ecosystems play a key role in the functioning of the biosphere, through carbon and water cycles and hence indirectly affect the provision of many other goods and services. This paper give an overview of climate change impacts and related research on forests ecosystems, outlines problems and research gaps, identifies research priorities and suggests recommendation to improve research in forestry to cope with the challenges of climate change and to contribute significantly to sustainable development.en
